Jazushi - Surry Hill's Answer to Tiny Portion, Tasty and Expensive Food

Last Friday, Cok and I realised to our horror that our Entertainment card/book will be expired in about a week's time. What a nightmare!!! There are so many restaurants that we haven't tried on. So we choosed carefully, and Friday was the time for Jazushi- A Japanese Tapas style located in the heart of Surry Hills. It was really easy to find parking there.

When we came in, the place was quite packed with reservation sign in each table. There was a unique ambiance with Buddha statue, warm lighting and the strong smell of the incense candle. There was a beautiful live jazz performance filling the background of the restaurant.

As we were seated in our seat in the terrace outside, we quickly eyed the menu with prying eyes, There was different interesting selection of food that we have never tried before...excitement

The waiter approached us with a small bowl - very small bowl of complimentary edamame. He told us what Jazushi's specials are, and usually two people should order about 3-4 dishes. Mind you that each dish cost about $20.

Complimentary Edamame - FREE

We followed the waiter's recommendation, and order the Special "camembert tempura", JFC (Jazushi Fried Chicken, I assumed), and Kakuni Pork Belly. We were very hungry by this time and we hoped that ordering these three dishes would fulfil our empty void. We didn't realized that we will soon be faced with disappointment.

The order came in quite quickly, HOWEVER, the portion was very small, and for that teeny tiny portion, the food came off as very pricey.

Camembert Tempura - with teriyaki creme sauce - $16

Six deep fried camembert are stacked together in the middle, covered generously with the teriyaki creme sauce, garnished with 4 tomato tempura at each side. The camembert was really delicious. I could feel the cheese melted in my mouth as I bite into the crunchy deep fried batter. The taste is not so overwhelming. It tasted just right. Delicious. Cok said that it was like "Heaven melted in My mouth"..a bit cheesy, but since it is a cheese dish, its okay!

JFC - Jazushi fried Chicken with yuzu citrus sauce on bed of tartare - $21

About eight pieces of Karagee chicken arranged nicely together forming a block in the middle. The sauces are placed at the bottom of the pile. The chicken was juicy and tender on the inside, crunchy on the outside (it's like I'm stealing KFC's slogan). It was tasty with enough flavor, and it doesn't leave our mouth feeling too oily, and we really hoped that the dish was bigger in portion.

Kakuni Pork Belly -
braised & marinated over night in soy dashi sauce - $19

This was my least favorite meal of the day. The meal was served with some roast potatoes, mustard and vegetables. Overall, this dish was bland. Not enough taste for the pork. It was quite hard to chew. The potatoes followed the suit of the protein - flavorless. I was disappointed.

As we finished our third and final dish, I didn't feel any kind of feeling resembeling fullness. I was still hungry, and I was paying about $60 for that meal. I was not amused. Cok wasn't too.

Overall, Jazushi was a nice restaurant, with a nice, warm ambiance. The food was fabulous, however, it was very expensive with the very very very small portion. I don't think I would even come back there if I had another entertainment card. It was just supposed to be a once in a lifetime dining experience.
