Buffet is The Source of Gluttony - Cafe Mix, The Rocks

I have always known that one of the deadly sin that I always commit over and over again is Gluttony, and buffet dining is mostly the source of that. I think that if I have a nickle everytime I swear that I will not go buffet again after I just have one, I will be rich by now.

Yes, last night was one of those buffet occassion, and Cok and I had it in Cafe Mix, Shangri-La Hotel. I was so excited because from the review I read at eatability and some other blog, the seafood and the dessert was supposedly good. I had quite a high expectation driving into The Rocks. The parking in Cumberland st was very easy. It takes us less than 3 minutes to get ourselves a decent cheap parking outside the hotel.

Went in, go to level one, by stair...it's like trying to exercise some calories off before we are in for the big one..and there we saw was a display of neat and colorful bottles of maybe drinks or cocktails, or maybe it was just a mere attempt of a decoration. I am not sure, but It was quite pretty.

We were greeted by the Asian lady. She was polite and nice, and she smiled throughout the night. I might

say that it is a little bit creepy :p . She seated us near the window, in the corner, and we were glad because no one will notice us being greedy. The restaurant was not that big. There was a cold-dish and salad section, the main section which consist of Italy, Japanese, Chinese and Indian ( That's why it is called Cafe Mix), and last but not least, the desert section.

How pretty is that? Before we eat, I started taking off the pictures of the food, and Cok is getting annoyed because I took such a long time. I tried to ask the Japanese chef to pose but he refused

We started off with some fresh oyster and prawns, anti pesto platter, fish cake and beef salad. We tried not to touch any of the green vegies, because it supposedly will make you feel full much faster. The fish cake and the beef salad was displayed nicely and it was very good. I was quite disappointed with other options of the seafood for the lack of variety and there were no sashimi. The oyster and the prawn were fresh, although I will not complain if they serve bigger size prawn. The food was not labelled properly either, so sometimes it is a bit unclear what we were eating

We then attack some chicken and roast from the Italian, which was a bit hard and tasteless, all of the sushi other than the inary, and the dim sum and the Japanese noodle was soggy and horrible. The curry were not the best I have ever tasted, the chicken was too spicy, and the beef is just weird. The only things that are quite good (notice, it's quite good, not excellent) are the chinese chicken, the butter chicken, the naan and the papadums. For a restaurant in Shangri-la hotel, I found the food selection to be quite dissapointing. They look quite good, but they don't taste good, and for a 4-star hotel which charges $58 dollar for a dinner buffet, this is quite disappointing.

The service at Cafe Mix was excellent. Everytime we stood to take another food, the waiter quickly fold our napkin, took the dirty plate, and refill the drink. It was a good service

The highlight of the night was the dessert. The dessert was pretty and they tasted good. We started with some chocolate cream with strawberry and passion fruit in it, again I'm not sure what they are called since they are not labeled properly. But they are really good. They taste not sickeningly sweet, just the right sweetness. They are placed in a pretty tall flute. The
tiramisu was a bit bitter, but it was good too.

This is actually the first time that I eat from a chocolate fountain, so I was quite excited about that. There were 2 fountains, milk chocolate and dark chocolate, and some strawberries and marshmallow. They taste normal, but it was just exciting to be using the fountain. I also had the chance to put my hand on some apple crumble, which was sourly sweet, some sweet rice with rambutan (which I don't like), some fruit parfait and jelly, chocolate tart, strawberry cheesecakes, some muffins, brownies, jaffa cake, macaroons, and chocolate domes. Most of them are good and I think that the desert was the best. I stuffed myself until it is painful for me to breathe, because I swear that my stomach has expanded so much and it starts poking through my ribs.....

Buffet has bring out the gluttony in me. I always say to myself, "well, I paid about $58 for this dinner, so I better eat as much as I can!" . Well, then after I eat and feeling bloated, I asked myself, "do i need to be having buffet? I mean with that amount of money, I can have 2 dinners at different place and not feeling sick!" This is why after buffet, I always swear to myself never to have buffet again. However, I know that soon I will be tempted to have one yet again.

Overall, Cafe Mix has an excellent desert selection, a bit in the disappointing side for the savoury, and for the seafood, since this is what they famous for. The atmosphere was good, and the service was excellent. My verdict: I recommend people to try the dessert buffet, not the whole line buffet!

It's funny how you told me to always remind you not to go to a buffet anymore, yet our next buffet adventure is what we talk about most of the time.
