Today, while at work, I encountered an interesting website which answers different questions about the history of different types of cakes. It was interesting...very much more interesting than processing solar cells. I think I have entered the wrong end of the work force...sigh..
I was interested in baking angel food cake. While I was looking for a decent recipe, Cok sent me a link to a website which hold interesting information. For example:
- The reason cakes are round is because Ancient breads and cakes were sometimes used in religious ceremonies. These were purposely fashioned into specific shapes, according to the observance. Round shapes generally symbolize the cyclical nature of life. Most specifically, the sun and moon
- Angel cakes derived its name because the cake its fluffy, white, light and must be fit for an angel
- Devil food cakes derived its name because unlike angel cakes, it is chocolate and it is dense
- Pound cake is called pound cake because the ingredient is all weighted one pound, i.e. 1 pound butter, flour, sugar and egg. This is similar to cupcake which uses 1 cup of each ingredient
- And from that name, cupcake are finally put into cup for its portion
I haven't finished reading this website, but I will..There is nothing more interesting than knowing the history of the food you cook and eat!!
